Geology Black shales over The Great Limestone.
Record Name Lingula, the earliest recorded brachiopod in the Geological Record which survives today unchanged.
Record Description Lingula squamaformis, a distinctive flat, ovoid slipper shaped fossil brachiopod. Found in black shales overlying the Great Limestone in the base of a low cliff on the south bank of Sleightholme Beck, see Reference 1.
When first recognised, these fossils were abundant and easily found. In the meantime however low water levels in the stream have allowed the growth of moss and algae over this exposure which is at stream level and these fossils are now very difficult to find.
